Rev. Floyd E. Meier was a pastor who served faithfully in the Western Pennsylvania District of the Christian & Missionary Alliance for 35 years. From 1965 through 1985 he served as the District Coordinator for Bible Quizzing. He is widely regarded as the “Father of Bible Quizzing in
Western PA.
” Pastor Meier is credited with developing and promoting Bible quizzing in
Western PA
and encouraging many churches and youth to participate in the program. Not only was he passionate about Bible quizzing, he also had a burden for young people to enter full-time Christian ministry. He was deeply interested in seeing quizzers grow to love God’s Word and to see their lives be so impacted by the truth of God’s Word that they would go on to serve the Lord throughout their lives.
After Pastor Meier went home to be with the Lord in 1985, a scholarship fund was established in his memory to recognize worthy quizzers and assist them with their higher education expenses. In accordance with Pastor Meier’s vision, the scholarship is intended to benefit quizzers who are studying to prepare for full-time ministry. The scholarship fund was initially endowed by the Meier family but has grown over the years with donations from the
Alliance
quizzing family. Scholarships have been awarded from the interest earned by the fund each year. Many of the past recipients have been from
Western PA
, but eligibility for the scholarship is not limited to Western PA Bible quizzers. In fact, scholarships have been awarded to several from other districts over the years. To date, one scholarship has been awarded each year, but it is hoped that as the fund builds, additional scholarships may become available.
The guidelines for determining eligibility and qualifications for the scholarship are as follows:
- Scholarships are restricted to C&MA Bible quizzers who are preparing for full-time Christian service such as pastoral ministry, missions, children or youth ministries, Christian education, etc.
- Quizzers are eligible to apply for consideration as high school juniors or seniors or both. However, a quizzer will only be eligible to receive one scholarship award.
- The selection criteria will take into consideration the applicant’s:
- Need for financial assistance
- Spiritual life and testimony
- Positive quizzing experience
- Vocational goals and motivation for entering full-time Christian service
- Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, gender, age or ethnicity.
Application forms for the Floyd E. Meier Scholarship are available from the Life Impact Ministries Office or at www.Lifeimpactcma.org. To receive consideration, a quizzer must submit a completed application to the Life Impact Ministries Office by April 1. The application includes a pastor’s questionnaire which must be submitted to the Life Impact Ministries Office by April 1. Scholarship awards will be announced at International Bible Quiz Finals in July.
The actual amount of the scholarship may vary but is solely dependent on the prevailing money market conditions. Scholarship funds will be payable directly to the institution of higher education designated by the applicant and will be applied to tuition expenses.
